The Reid Report – your Trust Needs You

Posted by Bill Fraser on August 12th, 2010

Media reaction to publication of the Strategic Review has been astonishment that the NTS has no clear record of the whereabouts of its assets – surely a core purpose for Scotland’s leading conservation charity. Harry Reid’s comment in The Herald is particularly apposite. We know a considerable amount of money was spent on a new financial system in recent years – so was this a complete waste?

Questions like this need to be asked and we urge our supporters to contact us with particular concerns that can be raised in advance of the AGM on 25th Sept. Are you concerned about missing items at a particular property? Do you have issues about specific management shortcomings?

We offer the Forum on this website as a convenient way to stimulate discussion or you can email or contact us through the PO Box number below

AGM 2010 – ITFS Submits Motion

Posted by Bill Fraser on May 7th, 2010

A big thank you to all members who have seconded the proposed motion for the 2010 AGM of the National Trust for Scotland on 25th September.

Having received more than sufficient signatures to submit the Motion before today’s deadline, we are now assured of a constitutional platform for discussion to address the unresolved issues we raised.

In four days we have been able to motivate Members to support the proposal and, although further signatures are no longer required, we welcome any comments either on this website Forum, our Facebook page, or by e-mail

‘Plus ça change…?’

Posted by Bill Fraser on May 4th, 2010

We have always sympathised with the possible problems created by the tight timetable set by George Reid for the Strategic Review. However,  there is a danger of the old discredited practices still holding sway unless action is taken swiftly.

On 28th April we wrote to Mr Reid:
‘When you invited us for discussions some months ago, we discussed the possible problem of the review conclusions becoming available for scrutiny after the current deadline of 1st week in May for Motions for the AGM at end-September 2010.
You took this on board; however slippage, of one month, indicates any contemplated motions for the AGM in September 2010 may be quite difficult to frame in a meaningful way, and to receive ‘acceptance’ for inclusion at the AGM?
There has been no formal statement to the membership, so members may then be deprived of their current constitutional rights?
This is a matter which the Council, Board and Chief Executive should have already discussed and minuted their ‘decisions’.
To avoid later recriminations, a copy of this letter is being sent to the Chief Executive, as a matter of urgency’

As of today (4th May) ITFS has not received any acknowledgement from either Mr Reid or the Chief Executive.

To safeguard members’ rights to a debate at the AGM, we have framed the following motion which we hope concerned members may feel able to sign:

While the Strategic Review under Dr George Reid has progressed, there has been no visible improvement in governance by the continuing unwieldy Council, Board or Executive staff of the NTS.  Examples are:- undisclosed sales’ benefits eg. 26-31 Charlotte Square, 2-6 Hope St Lane, Northgate House Peebles; – closed properties eg. Leith Hall, Huntly; untenanted rental property eg. Ramsay Garden, Edinburgh; quantities of valuable ‘spare’ furniture eg. Bute House, Wemyss House – put into expensive storage or sold.

Transparency and accountability to the membership are not optional.

We therefore propose:

A requirement that volunteer guides and local membership, involved in the support of properties, must be actively consulted and heeded by the Council and Executive staff

That their essential contribution be specifically extended by the inclusion of young members

That the co-operation of the Scottish Government Minister for Education be invited to support the involvement of youth within the NTS properties

We also reaffirm our 2009 AGM call for a Business Plan for each property

If you are ready to support such a motion, we ask you to follow the instructions on the panel to the right ‘2010 Annual General Meeting’ and download a copy, sign and return to ITFS to arrive by 6th May. Please note only original signed forms are acceptable and must be returned to ITFS not direct to the NTS

» Strategic Review Report Published

YOUR COMMENTS REQUIRED

A FIT FOR PURPOSE NTS, is the goal of the review which recommends a programme of reform including:

  • - The number of NTS Trustees to be reduced from 87 to 15 – to give the organisation strategic direction.
  • - A new Board to be elected by April 2011 – to implement the reform agenda.
  • - A new Mission Statement to be agreed with members — to emphasise the Trust’s core conservation purpose.
  • - An audit and a full property portfolio review of the NTS estate — to determine the cost of maintenance of its estate and its future management.
  • - A five year strategic plan— to ensure that the Trust worked in future to specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound objectives.

You can download a copy from the NTS website. This report will be discussed at the AGM on 25th September, perhaps members’ only real opportunity to put their views.

AGM Proxy

Members who cannot attend the AGM can complete and return a proxy form to nominate the Chairman of the meeting or any other member as a proxy to vote on their behalf on the ITFS motion and other items. If you would like to nominate Miss Mary E Mackenzie of In Trust for Scotland please download the attached proxy form and return it to ITFS at the address below by Friday 10th September so we can collate them an deliver to the Trust by the deadline.

We welcome all comments either on this Website Forum, our Facebook Page, or by e-mail.
