The reprieves for various NTS properties and the smaller number of redundancies are very welcome, but it does not address the basic issue with NTS - that they have no real business plan or vision. Reprieves are by definition short-term.
With the greatest of respect to individual lobbying skills, the fundamental issue of the long-term management of NTS still needS to be addressed. Responding to local pressure is no substitute for a well-considered strategy on funding, marketing and conservation. The present Board & Council appear not to exhibit the necessary skills.
We hope these short term fixes will not deflect support from our purpose – an open discussion of the financial facts leading to a complete review of NTS objectives and the means necessary to achieve them.
I am in agreement with you. The marketing of the NTS is woeful at present and there does not appear to be any clarity on the finances. Closure of gardens and loss of well-respected staff will be bound to have an effect on incoming grants and legacies, as well as on the outside perception of the conservation credentials of the organisation. The inability of the Board to consult or even properly inform staff and membership of the true position of the Trust is worrying and patronising. The track record of the Chairman is also of concern.
